The Foreign Minister in Elsinore: If Russia escalates the situation in Ukraine, we must be ready to tighten economic sanctions

Meeting in Elsinore, Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus discussed guaranteeing regional energy security and cooperation in the field of strategic communications with her colleagues from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden.

The Nordic and Baltic Foreign Ministers considered strengthening cooperation in the field of strategic communication to be of great importance. “The brazen dissemination of false information by the Kremlin’s propaganda machine requires coordinated and careful oppositional action by Western countries. Supporting the activities of the free media in Eastern Partnership countries is what we need to do along with other Western countries,” the Foreign Minister said. Pentus-Rosimannus added that the creation of the European External Action Service’s strategic communications team is also a necessary step in order to refute wrongful information and support the activities of a free media.

The Nordic and Baltic Foreign Ministers stressed that in order to guarantee the region's energy security, the deepening of cooperation is extremely important. “The construction of energy connections between Western countries in order to ensure security and independence in the field of energy policy is the most important task in the upcoming years. In our region, some of the most important projects in the coming years are the construction of the regional LNG terminal as an alternative supply source and the Balticconnector gas pipeline linking Finnish and Estonian gas networks,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said.

The foreign ministers also discussed ways to support Ukraine in improving its energy efficiency. “Ukraine's energy sector has great potential, but in order to develop, this sector also needs serious reforms. The country also needs support to increase energy efficiency in the country,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said, adding that Estonia is considering ways to assist Ukraine in this area.

On the subject of the fragile situation in Eastern Ukraine, the foreign ministers emphasized that Russia must put an end to the aggression and comply with the Minsk Agreements. “Before Russia has done this, it is not possible to talk about easing sanctions. And if necessary, in the event of an escalation, we have to be prepared to increase sanctions,” Pentus-Rosimannus said.

Issues related to the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga were also discussed. “We need to support Eastern Partners in carrying out their reforms and in promoting relations with the EU. We wish to emphasize that we hope that the Eastern Partners get a message from Riga that European integration is possible in the case of the successful implementation of reforms,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said.
