Estonian opened its second honorary consulate in Lithuania


On January 16, Foreign Minister Keit Pentus Rosimannus opened a new Estonian Honorary Consulate in Kaunas, Lithuania. The Estonian Honorary Consul is Žaneta Simanavičienė and her consular area is Kaunas, Marijampolė and Alytus County.

“In a way, the opening of this Honorary Consulate is a restoration of the representation of Estonia in Kaunas, since the Estonian Embassy was located in Kaunas in the period between the two World Wars,” Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said. “It is also symbolic that in this city, known for its university, which is a twin-city with Tartu, the Estonian Honorary Consulate is located on the territory of the Kaunas University of Technology. The Honorary Consulate increases Estonia’s visibility in Lithuania, gives a new impetus for creating new contacts and also for developing educational, scientific and cultural relations between the two countries,” she added.

The Estonian Honorary Consul Žaneta Simanavičienė was born in 1956 and spent her early childhood in Estonia. She has worked as a researcher and lecturer at many Lithuanian institutes of higher education. Since 2007, she has been professor and head of the Institute of Business Economics at the Kaunas University of Technology. She currently works closely with the Tallinn University of Technology.

The Honorary Consul speaks Lithuanian, English, Russian and Polish.

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus participated in a security conference in Lithuania on January 15 and 16. The Foreign Minister took part in a panel discussion, which focused on the changed security situation in Europe as a result of Russia's actions.
