Pentus-Rosimannus: the actions of Putin's regime require economic sanctions being extended

22.06.2015

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus is participating in a meeting of the European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg tomorrow, which is scheduled to approve the extension of economic sanctions against Russia.

"The extension of economic sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia has essentially been decided, since the actions of Putin's regime and ongoing aggression in Ukraine demand it. The Member States are unanimous on this issue.

In Eastern Ukraine, people continue to live in fear of war, since the ceasefire is essentially violated every day. In addition to the extension of sanctions, we need to be prepared to respond quickly in the event of an escalation and to significantly increase economic sanctions," Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said.

In addition to extending Russia's economic sanctions, the foreign ministers will discuss the European Union's relations with Asia and the Pacific region. According to the Foreign Minister, the Asian-themed discussion is necessary since Asia is not only a region with a rapidly growing economy and an attractive trading partner, but also important in terms security issues. "The European Union should find a common approach on how to cooperate with Asia regarding this issue," Pentus-Rosimannus said.

Also on the agenda will be the European Union's crisis-management cooperation with the United Nations. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will participate in the discussion to focus on Libya, Syria and Yemen. The Council will also approve the European Union's priorities for the 70th UN General Assembly.

At the meeting of the foreign ministers, issues related to energy diplomacy and the situation with Macedonia* will also be discussed.
