The Foreign Minister at Ämari: the presence of NATO fighters in Estonia is a strong message of the Alliance's unity

06.05.2015

At the handover ceremony of the NATO Air Policing rotation at Ämari Air Base, Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus thanked the Allied Forces and the Estonian Defence Forces for their professional collaboration and service in ensuring security for the Alliance, and especially for Estonia.

“The allies are here in Estonia and this is a clear message of NATO's unity and readiness,” Pentus-Rosimannus said. “The activity of Russia’s air force in our region is several times more intense than in 2013. Protecting the Alliance's airspace at Ämari reinforces both Estonian security, as well as NATO's collective defence as a whole,” she added.

Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus expressed her gratitude to the Spanish unit finishing its rotation and welcomed the UK’s Royal Air Force, who is taking over the policing mission. “In Estonia, we have started to call NATO flyovers the voice of freedom. We know the value of this and appreciate it greatly,” the Foreign Minister said. “The United Kingdom and Spain are our important allies. We are pleased that Estonia's security cooperation with the United Kingdom is continuing following the military mission in Afghanistan. Spanish participation in strengthening Baltic Air Policing also confirms that within the Alliance, countries contribute collectively to each other challenges,” the Foreign Minister added.

The 38th rotation of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland will be carried out by Belgium, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom from May to September. Four United Kingdom Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets will be keeping guard over the region’s air space from Ämari Air Base.
