Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translators’ competition opened

23.12.2014

Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Keit Pentus-Rosimannus and Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs are announcing a competition for the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translation award. This is the sixth time such a competition has been held and the winner of the competition will be decided in the spring of 2015.

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that Estonia and Latvia want to recognise the best translators into the Latvian and Estonian languages and also hope to inspire the translation of Estonian-language works into Latvian and vice versa.

The monetary value of the award is 3000 euros and the Foreign Ministries of Estonia and Latvia will contribute to it equally. The panel will include representatives of both foreign ministries, as well as literary experts.

Candidates for the translation competition for specific works and translation activities in 2014 may be submitted via the application form on the Foreign Ministry’s webpage (www.vm.ee/sites/default/files/Eesti_lati_tolkeauhinna_vorm.doc (DOC)) and by including the translator’s CV. The deadline for the application is 9 February 2015.

In previous years, the awards have been presented to translators Maima Grīnberga (2009, 2012), Guntars Godinš (2010, 2013) and Kalev Kalkun (2011).

The agreement to create the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translation award was signed by Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet and Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Māris Riekstiņš on 18 February 2009.
