An Estonian doctor met with Eston Kohver today

Today, on December 30, following a long waiting period after requesting a visit, an Estonian doctor was granted permission to visit Eston Kohver in the Lefortovo Prison in Moscow. The Estonian Consul was not allowed to participate in the meeting.

During the visit, Dr. Tiit Meren carried out a medical check on Eston Kohver and assessed his condition as being satisfactory.

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus was pleased that Eston Kohver was finally allowed to meet with an Estonian doctor, but considered it regrettable that the meeting was delayed for several months. "We will do everything in our power to help alleviate the current situation of Eston Kohver. We will monitor that his health does not deteriorate and provide any medication necessary. We are ready to re-apply for permission for another visit from a doctor," Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus added, confirming that Estonian authorities are continuing to make every effort so that Eston Kohver, who is being illegally detained in Russia, will be released immediately and can return home.

Foreign Minister condemned yesterday's Moscow court decision yesterday to extend the deadline for Eston Kohver's custody until early April of next year. "The abduction of Eston Kohver from the territory of the Republic of Estonia and subsequent detention in Russia are violations of international law," she added.
