Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus met with Polish Secretary of State for European Affairs Rafał Trzaskowski

06.03.2015

At her meeting today with Poland's Secretary of State for European Union Affairs Rafał Trzaskowski, Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus discussed bilateral relations between Estonia and Poland and future collaboration. Pentus-Rosimannus and Trzaskowski acknowledged that relations between Estonia and Poland are very good and Estonian and Polish views are very similar concerning topics that were discussed. “Estonia and Poland both consider united positions regarding Russia to be important, particularly in the way of sanctions,” Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said. “Today, six months ago, Eston Kohver was illegally jailed by Russian authorities. We spoke on this subject, since international pressure on Russia demanding the release of Eston Kohver is of great importance,” the Foreign Minister added. Poland fully supports Estonia and has joined the demands for the immediate release of Eston Kohver.

On the topic of defence cooperation, Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus highlighted Poland’s active participation in the Baltic air policing mission and Polish participation in the major defence exercise “Siil” (Hedgehog) in May. “I am pleased to note that very efficient and stable cooperation has developed in the field of defence education between Estonia and Poland, for instance Poland regularly sends both students and lecturers to the Baltic Defence College,” the Foreign Minister said.

“Estonian-Polish relations are already very good and we see further opportunities, especially in the fields of defence and the economy,” Pentus-Rosimannus said, adding that, for example, the development of Rail Baltic would contribute to the development of bilateral economic relations of both Estonia and Poland and would also accelerate the development of the region as a whole.
