Paet Expressed Support for Prompt Attention to Iceland’s Accession Application in EU


Foreign Minister Urmas Paet spoke to his Icelandic colleague Össur Skarphedinsson over the phone regarding Iceland’s desire to join the European Union. On Friday of last week, Iceland presented its application to accede to the European Union to the current presidency Sweden.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet expressed his complete support for Iceland’s wish to join the European Union. “We hope that the European Union will expand towards Northern Europe very soon,” Paet stated. “Iceland acceding to the European Union is very important to Estonia. We’re ready to share our accession experiences with Iceland,” he added.

Skarphedinsson confirmed Iceland’s desire to adhere to the usual EU enlargement procedure and conditions and thanked his Estonian colleague for supporting Iceland’s plan to accede.

On Monday, 27 July, the European Union foreign policy leaders will discuss Iceland’s accession application at the European Union General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) in Brussels. Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia is interested in Iceland’s application being addressed in the European Union without any complications.
